Long-time FBKI member Ute Schmid receives Rainer Markgraf Award 2020
Prof. Dr. Ute Schmid receives the Rainer Markgraf Prize 2020, which honors outstanding achievements in education, science and research in the regions of Upper Franconia and Upper Palatinate. The Rainer Markgraf Foundation honors Schmid for her commitment to the transfer of knowledge between university, research and educational work. The Rainer Markgraf Foundation justifies the award by saying that Schmid, as a pioneer in research, takes away people's often prevailing skepticism about artificial intelligence. The award ceremony will take place in mid-November 2020.
After studying computer science and psychology, Ute Schmid habilitated in computer science at the TU Berlin in 2001. Since 2004, she has been teaching and conducting research as a professor of applied computer science at the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg. In her scientific work in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cognitive modeling, she combines the discipline of computer science with psychological insights. Her focus is on inductive programming, interpretable and human-level machine learning, and the generation of explanations for classifiers.
In addition, Ute Schmid is intensively involved in promoting women in computer science and has been giving computer science workshops for children and young people since 2005. She also holds continuing education courses on computer science for preschool and elementary school and is active in the GI Artificial Intelligence Department.
