SUMMARY:Higher-Level Cognition and Computation, Workshop at KI 2014
DESCRIPTION:Human higher-level cognition is a multi-faceted and complex are
a of thinking which includes the mental processes of reasoning, decision ma
king, creativity, and learning among others. Logic, understood as a normati
ve theory of thinking, has a widespread and pervasive effect on the foundat
ions of cognitive science. However, human reasoning cannot be completely de
scribed by logical systems. Sources of explanations are incomplete knowledg
e, incorrect beliefs, or inconsistencies. Still, humans have an impressive
ability to derive satisficing, acceptable conclusions. Generally, people em
ploy both inductive and deductive reasoning to arrive at beliefs; but the s
ame argument that is inductively strong or powerful may be deductively inva
lid. Therefore, a wide range of reasoning mechanism has to be considered, s
uch as analogical or defeasible reasoning.\n\nThis workshop aims at bringin
g together researchers from Artificial Intelligence, Automated Deduction, C
omputer Science, Cognitive Psychology, Philosophy, and related areas to fos
ter a multi-disciplinary exchange between research in higher-level cognitio
n and computation. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the f
ollowing:\n\n analogical reasoning common sense and defeasible reasoning
deductive calculi for higher-level cognition inductive reasoning and cogn
ition preferred mental models and their formalization probabilisic approa
 ches of reasoning
